Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, replaces your body's natural hormones, which become depleted at menopause. The Amara Clinic’s highly-experienced team are trained to customise HRT to your individual needs using a wide range of ‘gold-standard’ body-identical hormones.
If the menopause is impacting your health and wellbeing or affecting your work, relationships or sexual function, HRT can make a really significant difference.

What is HRT?
Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT replaces the hormones which become depleted around the time of perimenopause and beyond, primarily oestrogen and, to a lesser degree, testosterone.
There is a wide range of evidence that HRT not only helps alleviate virtually all the unpleasant and debilitating symptoms which accompany the menopause but can also provide future health protection by reducing your risk conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, strokes, bowel cancer and possible even dementia in later life.
What hormones are used for HRT?
The specialists at The Amara Clinic will customise your HRT to suit your symptoms, hormones, general health and personal preferences. The hormones include:
Oestrogen will not only help alleviate hot flushes and sweats and address vaginal dryness but will also have a positive impact on virtually every single recognised menopausal symptom including physical, emotional and psychological concerns. If taken in a sufficient dose for a longer period of time, oestrogen will also provide excellent protection against osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and potentially certain types of dementia.
Oestrogen works most efficiently and safely when applied trans-dermally (through the skin) as the patch, gel or spray: this is called Body-identical Oestradiol and is recognised to be the ‘gold-standard’ treatment. Women who have had a hysterectomy usually take oestrogen-only HRT whereas women with a uterus will also require progesterone- see below. Women who cannot tolerate transdermal preparations or who do not achieve satisfactory blood hormone levels may progress to subdermal implants. This is a highly specialist form of treatment, which is only available in a small number of select menopause clinics.
Self-referral for HRT
Following the publication of the NICE menopause guidelines and support from celebrities like Davina McCall, there has been an enormous increase in menopause awareness. This has driven more women to seek expert healthcare during perimenopause and menopause. Miss Anne Henderson says:
‘Women are increasingly taking control of their health. This trend towards self-education and self-referral is encouraging to see. It shows we have finally started breaking the taboo around HRT and moving away from the idea that it increases the risk of breast cancer.
‘The HRT women are prescribed today is vastly different from that prescribed just a few years ago. Previous advice was to take the lowest dose for the shortest time, and that is no longer the case.
‘Today, women are choosing to take HRT earlier; it can be incredibly effective when commenced during perimenopause. Women are also continuing to take it well into their 60s and beyond. Considering that women today will live one third of their lives beyond the menopause, having evidence-based, unbiased HRT information is key to living life to the full! At The Amara Clinic, we can give you the information you need to help you take back control of your health and wellbeing.’
