Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Expert services in Kent, London & surrounding areas

The Amara Clinic provides tailored HRT treatment and holistic menopause care in a beautiful, safe and stress-free environment in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. We also offer virtual appointments, expert menopause management and monitoring for women across the UK and worldwide.

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, replaces your body's natural hormones, which become depleted at menopause. The Amara Clinic’s highly-experienced team are trained to customise HRT to your individual needs using a wide range of ‘gold-standard’ body-identical hormones.

If the menopause is impacting your health and wellbeing or affecting your work, relationships or sexual function, HRT can make a really significant difference.

A message from The Amara Clinic

Please note that due to unprecedented demand for HRT, private prescriptions issued via The Amara Clinic can take up to 14 days to turn around. The clinic requests that you refrain from chasing your prescriptions within this timeframe but please feel free to contact us of you have not received your medication after the allocated time. Thank you

Menopause care you can trust

The Amara Clinic provides bespoke health and menopause care. The clinic is led by Miss Anne Henderson, a Consultant Gynaecologist and renowned British Menopause Society (BMS) accredited specialist: Anne is one of only 200 such specialists across the UK. The BMS recognises highly-qualified healthcare professionals who have demonstrated a higher level of knowledge and expertise in Menopause and HRT with additional training in the specialty. Anne says:

"I believe all menopausal and perimenopausal women should be offered the opportunity to have a fully-informed discussion about the pros and cons of HRT based on the current evidence and based on modern ‘gold-standard’ HRT formulas.’

With over 35 years of experience in the specialty, Anne leads a skilled multi-disciplinary team. Together they offer a range of services to support you during the perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

You will be able to choose appointments and a treatment schedule at your convenience. You will no longer be at the mercy of substantial NHS delays when you are a patient at The Amara Clinic.

Care tailored to you and your menopause journey

The professionals at The Amara Clinic will customise your menopause care to your individual needs. We will offer advice not only on HRT but also on diet and lifestyle changes, supplements and complementary therapies to ensure your menopause journey remains healthy, positive and joyful.

The clinic is run by women for women. You will meet with a dedicated menopause specialist who will be responsible for your care throughout your menopause journey and will advise you on your treatment options at all stages, ensuring a personalised service with continuity of care.

Your treatment journey will include staged follow-up appointments and where necessary blood tests and ultrasound scan imaging to ensure your treatment plan is not only highly effective but also safe and tailored to your requirements. You will then continue as a patient at the Clinic with ongoing annual reviews to ensure that your HRT regime remains optimised in the long term.

As a Centre of Excellence entirely dedicated to women’s health, you will be able to have investigations, smear tests and imaging as well as a private pharmacy service under one roof. As a result of the comprehensive range of services available at The Amara Clinic together with Miss Henderson’s specialism in gynaecology we rarely have to refer patients onwards to other doctors or healthcare practitioners.

What is HRT?

Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT replaces the hormones which become depleted around the time of perimenopause and beyond, primarily oestrogen and, to a lesser degree, testosterone.

There is a wide range of evidence that HRT not only helps alleviate virtually all the unpleasant and debilitating symptoms which accompany the menopause but can also provide future health protection by reducing your risk conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, strokes, bowel cancer and possible even dementia in later life.

Not all hormones are equal

The Amara Clinic uses the latest evidence-based treatments and follows best practice guidelines from the British Menopause Society and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

The hormones we use and prescribe at The Amara Clinic are the highest quality, carefully regulated, body-identical hormones. These hormones are exactly the same as your body’s naturally-occurring hormones, are the safest to use and have the lowest risk of side effects and complications.

You may have read about compounded bioidentical hormones (cBHRT) – they are often advertised as being 'natural' and ‘individualised' for each particular patient. In contrast to body-identical hormones, which are fully regulated, it’s important that women recognise that these formulations are not adequately regulated, nor are they subject to the same robust scientific scrutiny as the HRT prescribed at The Amara Clinic. Amongst other bodies, the British Menopause Society does not recommend cBHRT and states:

‘The management of women with menopause related problems should be underpinned by the principles and guidelines of the British Menopause Society and wherever possible, regulated products should be prescribed.’

What hormones are used for HRT?

The specialists at The Amara Clinic will customise your HRT to suit your symptoms, hormones, general health and personal preferences. The hormones include:

Oestrogen will not only help alleviate hot flushes and sweats and address vaginal dryness but will also have a positive impact on virtually every single recognised menopausal symptom including physical, emotional and psychological concerns. If taken in a sufficient dose for a longer period of time, oestrogen will also provide excellent protection against osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and potentially certain types of dementia.

Oestrogen works most efficiently and safely when applied trans-dermally (through the skin) as the patch, gel or spray: this is called Body-identical Oestradiol and is recognised to be the ‘gold-standard’ treatment. Women who have had a hysterectomy usually take oestrogen-only HRT whereas women with a uterus will also require progesterone- see below. Women who cannot tolerate transdermal preparations or who do not achieve satisfactory blood hormone levels may progress to subdermal implants. This is a highly specialist form of treatment, which is only available in a small number of select menopause clinics.

What are the benefits and risks of HRT?

HRT can restore your hormonal balance by putting back what’s been lost during menopause. However, it's essential to understand that every treatment has benefits and risks. Recent research shows that for most women under 60, the benefits of taking HRT outweigh the risks. And the earlier you start taking HRT, the more benefits there are to your health.

At The Amara Clinic, your menopause specialist will talk you through the pros and cons of HRT so that you can make an informed choice about the best way to manage your menopause journey.

Self-referral for HRT

Following the publication of the NICE menopause guidelines and support from celebrities like Davina McCall, there has been an enormous increase in menopause awareness. This has driven more women to seek expert healthcare during perimenopause and menopause. Miss Anne Henderson says:

‘Women are increasingly taking control of their health. This trend towards self-education and self-referral is encouraging to see. It shows we have finally started breaking the taboo around HRT and moving away from the idea that it increases the risk of breast cancer.

‘The HRT women are prescribed today is vastly different from that prescribed just a few years ago. Previous advice was to take the lowest dose for the shortest time, and that is no longer the case.

‘Today, women are choosing to take HRT earlier; it can be incredibly effective when commenced during perimenopause. Women are also continuing to take it well into their 60s and beyond. Considering that women today will live one third of their lives beyond the menopause, having evidence-based, unbiased HRT information is key to living life to the full! At The Amara Clinic, we can give you the information you need to help you take back control of your health and wellbeing.’
