Menopause & HRT

Obtaining specialist expert advice regarding menopausal and pre-menstrual issues can be invaluable. There have been significant advances in the treatment of both conditions over recent years, with the current focus now on the use of body-identical hormones and individualised treatment, rather than a “one size fits all” process.

This type of approach not only provides a safer option than synthetic hormone equivalents, but side effects are generally minimised and treatment regimes can be altered on an individual basis to ensure optimum symptom control and compliance.

The recently published British Menopause Society guidelines now advocate offering treatment to all women up to the age of 60, and current evidence suggests benefits outweigh risks in the majority of women in this age group.

For those patients who are unable to have HRT, or who would prefer an alternative choice, herbal medicine has a great deal to offer. Anita Ralph, the Medical Herbalist with whom I work in the Integrated Gynaecological Clinic, is very happy to offer advice and treatment to those women who wish to explore this option.

Dietary advice can also be extremely helpful for managing these conditions – both Anita Ralph and Katie Peck are experts in this area.
